Vulgate Bible The Bible in Latin
The Vulgate Bible, the Bible written in Latin was the essential book on which mediaeval Christianity turned. The most widely used Vulgate Bible was the translation prepared by St Jerome in the 4th century. Despite the importance of the Bible to Scholastic learning and debate, it apparently never occured to the great theologians of that era to question the validity of St Jerome's translation from the Hebrew. The Church was suspicious of the misinterpretation that ignorant or malevolent minds might place upon the word of God. By insisting that only the Latin version of the Bible be published and used, the Church sought to make the study, interpretation and dissemination of the Bible the preserve of learned men. And of course the only way you could really hope to become learned in the 14th century was by joining the Church!
