Via Francigena The Pilgrim road to Rome
As the Holy Land was overrun with muslims who dertmined to keep out Christian pilgrims and regularly attacked Christian settlements across the middle east, so those who wanted to make a pilgrimage as a sign of their devotion to their beliefs and to the Holy Mother Church, looked to Rome as a destination. This is an excellent website that charts some of the history behind the pilgrim road from Canterbury to Rome and provides the detail that modern pilgrims need to retrace the steps of our forefathers.
