Escape
1385 July

Urban finally determined to break the siege of Nocera but he made sure that Adam and his fellow captives would go with him - in chains. However Urban was far from safe and with an army of hired hands he still had some troubles of his own to deal with.

The morning of the following day, that was Friday 7th July, the pope resolved to leave the safety of the castle and his household was loaded up on beasts and he descended from the castle with his captive cardinals in chains. Leading his whole army with him he directed them on towards the plains of Salerno. But as he made his passage through a narrow pass, his enemies men tried to attack and capture him. But the pope perservering they could not oppose his passage, albeit he lost some of his things. Driving back the aforesaid enemy the knights and footsoldiers in his army stealthily stole away [across the pass]. When they were near the battlements [of the city wall] of Salerno a number of them believing the pope was neither able nor willing to pay their wages, making the most of the opportunity they exacted from him, in trust, that if he did not furnish them with sufficient security, they proposed to take him to Avignon, the residence of the antipope. But the Lord Raymond and the Germans and Italians kept faith with him, although being hard pressed he was unwilling to agree with their demands. Although he disagreed, the pope paid 11,000 florins without hesitation and gave a pledge under his good faith for 31,000 florins that he promised he would give in a fixed time. After three days progress he was received at the castle of Flumeri. Then he dismissed most of the the French, Breton and Italian (mercenaries) keeping just Raymond and his faithful Italians and Germans in his retinue, namely 300 lancers.
