Mediaeval Charters
The First Somersham Charter

The grant of a charter, most likely for a market or a fair is a useful source of information for the student of mediaeval history. The charter gives an indication of economic development, of the existence of surplus in communities which had been farming at subsistence levels, it also gives anecdotal clues as to the names of royal advisors and the progress of the royal court around the UK.

This book takes a look at the background to the granting of a charter to hold a market, granted in 1190 by King Richard I to the village of Somersham in Huntingdonshire. The full text of the charter in Latin and English is also included.
