Original Source Documents
The vast majority of topics displayed on this website are based upon a piece of original source material. The idea of the site is to tell the story of Adam through contemporary accounts. However the nature of work on mediaeval documents is such that it is often highly fragmented. Studies may be published on a particular letter or perhaps a missal or order of service, rarely however can the documenst be viewed and understood in a more general context. This site, by bringing the various fragemnts and details from registers and letter books together in one place, seeks to provide that context and to give a resource that should be of value to any serious students of this period of history.
Many of the source documents presented in this site were originally written in mediaeval Latin, a few in French and with a couple of exceptions, none in English. All of the explanations for the context of the document are provided in English, however the text of the document itself varies. All have been transcribed as displaying the originals would be a thankless task in terms of the permissions and reproduction rights that would be necessary. However the transciptions give the student the chance to see the text for themselves and interpret them for themselves. Many have been translated into English to allow students without a good grasp of Latin to get an understanding. Some appear in the origianl French or Latin, but in all cases have been transcribed out of the abbreviated shorthand used by mediaeval clerks.
