Boniface tries to help 1389-1391
Newly restored to his position of cardinal, granted the honorary title of Cardinal Priest of St Cecilia and recognised as the most senior cardinal after the pope himself in Boniface's court, Adam still had a relatively poor income as a prince of the Church. He only held a vicarage in Somersham and a deanery of York, both in England and even these were in dispute as Richard II had awarded them to his own courtiers once Urban VI had thrown Adam into prison. Boniface now tried to help his senior cardinal by making awards to him of other benefices but particularly in England, this brought him increasingly into conflict with a newly assertive Richard II. It is worth noting that although Adam probably did not get hold of the deanery of Orkney due to local politics on the islands, the Orkneys were in the 14th century part of the Kingdom of Norway (ruled by Queen Margaret also of Denmark and Sweden) a supporter of the Roman papacy, rather than Scotland which had backed the Avignonese papacy. 11 Kalends January 1390 (actually recorded as 1389 but surely a mistake as Urban would still have been pope) - To the bishops of Durham and Hereford and another named. Mandate motu proprio to give to Adam cardinal priest of St Cecilia the provostship, which is the principal dignity with cure, of St John's Beverley, value 400 marks, whether void by the death of John de Thoresby or by the resignation of Adam Spenser, made to Alexander bishop of St Andrew, then Archbishop of York or otherwise void; notwithstanding that the said Cardinal (ie Adam) is a Benedictine. (pro domino cardinali). 4 Nones November 1390 - To Adam cardinal priest of St Cecilia. Provision of a canonry and the chantership of Lisbon, the value of which together with the canonry and prebend of Aylesbury in Lincoln, provision of which he has also this day received, by other letters is 200 marks. Concurrent mandate to the archbishop of Braga and the Bishops of Lisbon and Derry. 6 Kalends February 1391 - to the bishop of Gardar dwelling in the Diocese of Orkney and Cristin de Sanday canon of Orkney. Mandate to carry out the letters of Urban VI ordering the bishop of Orkney and the aforesaid archdeacon and canon to collate and assign to Adam cardinal priest of St Cecilia, the archdeaconry of Shetland in Orkney so long void by the death of William Wod that by the statutes of the Lateran Council it had lapsed to the pope, although unlawfully held by Walter de Bucchania priest of the diocese of Aberdeen, the cardinal being unable to obtain execution of the said letters chiefly by reason of the absence of John, bishop of Orkney.
