Foot and mouth 1347
The outbreaks of animal murrains and crop failures that had blighted the second decade of the 14th century continued at regular intervals as the century progressed. These records taken from the court rolls of Heachem near Kings Lynn in Norfolk show just how destructive these outbreaks of animal disease could be. Norfolk was an important centre for wool and cloth and the death toll among the sheep kept at this small Norfolk Manor in just a few months is a graphic illustration of the impact not just on the wealth of the manor but on its ability to feed those who depended upon it for their livelihoods.
