Monastic Life
Saint Jean les Vignes

This is one of the finest web attempts to reconstruct the monastic life on line. The site mixes images of the monastic buildings with original texts in translation and transcription that explain the order of monastic routine and the hierarchy of the monastery as well as providing charters relating to the monastic foundation. The explanations are thoroughly researched but presented in an accessible fashion, not over wrought with technical terms and archaic language.

Saint Jean les Vignes was an Augustinian house in the dicoese of Soissons in northern France. Today the monastery is mostly ruined, the impact of overzealous revolutionaries in late 18th century France. The French caridnal Jean Dormans who worked with Simon Langham during the peace mission to Northern France was buried at the Abbey and came from the town of Dorman on the river Marne, just a few kilometers from Soissons.
